Charles Janko studied playing the organ and the piano at Piet van Egmond. He pursued his piano studies at Jose Leal. He studied painting and graphic arts at the Rijksacademie van Beeldende Kunsten in Amsterdam, after which he took a further course in sonology (electronic music) at the Utrecht University.
He worked as a musical director for the operas 'The Medium' and 'Amahl and the nightvisitors' of Gian-Carlo Menotti and Puccini's 'Suor Angelica'. He directed the musical 'From Berlin to Broadway', a musical about the life of Kurt Weill.

Since 1992 Janko has accompanied silent movies with live organ and piano music for the Filmmuseum Amsterdam and for various filmfestivals at home and abroad. Apart from writing contemporary compositions for historic silent movies, he composed the music for the animation film 'Alice in Cartoonland' by walt Disney (VPRO) and for the film 'JUJIRO' by the Japanese director Kinogase.
